In a rapidly shifting geopolitical landscape, Ukraine continues to seek assurances from its Western allies. Ahead of his upcoming visit to Washington, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has reiterated the need for security guarantees to deter further Russian aggression.

Security Commitments in Question

According to HotNews.ro, Zelensky emphasized in a speech on Wednesday that “peace and security guarantees are key to preventing Russia from destroying the lives of other nations.”

He also stressed the importance of continued U.S. assistance, stating that “it is crucial for me and for all of us that America’s support does not stop.”

However, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled a different approach, asserting that European nations—not the United States—should provide Ukraine with security guarantees.

He further dismissed Kyiv’s aspirations for NATO membership, telling Ukraine to “forget about it” as part of a potential conflict resolution plan with Russia.

Controversial Mineral Agreement on the Table

Despite tensions over security aid, Zelensky is expected to sign a framework agreement with the U.S. regarding Ukraine’s mineral resources.

Initially hesitant due to concerns over the absence of security guarantees, Zelensky ultimately accepted a revised version of the deal, which no longer ties Ukraine to financial obligations for previous U.S. military aid.

The visit comes at a critical moment, as Ukraine faces mounting battlefield pressure while navigating diplomatic complexities with a shifting U.S. administration. As Trump’s stance on Ukraine remains unpredictable, Zelensky’s push for continued support will likely be a focal point of discussions in Washington.
