US President Donald Trump’s decision to pull the United States out of the Paris Agreement has drawn sharp criticism from Greenpeace and other global organizations.
Mads Flarup Christensen, Executive Director of Greenpeace International, called the move a serious mistake, saying it puts both the US and the world at greater risk.
“Walking away from the Paris Agreement won’t protect anyone from climate disasters like wildfires or hurricanes,” Christensen told Ritzau. “Ignoring global problems will only make them worse. With wildfires burning in Los Angeles, abandoning this agreement is reckless and short-sighted.”
Greenpeace accused Trump of pushing a fossil fuel agenda that is out of step with the rest of the world. Christensen said countries that continue to rely on oil and gas will fall behind as others embrace clean energy.
“While Trump’s administration supports fossil fuels, the world is moving forward with renewable energy and climate action. Countries that bet on oil and gas will be left behind,” he said.
Christensen expressed hope in the strength of the Paris Agreement, which is backed by nearly every nation on Earth. “The Paris Agreement remains strong. It’s driven by communities, businesses, and nations committed to stopping climate change and moving away from fossil fuels,” he explained.
Despite Trump’s decision, Greenpeace pledged to continue fighting for climate justice.
“This decision makes the fight harder, but people around the world will keep standing up to protect the planet and resist climate destruction,” Christensen said.
