A 28-year-old Libyan man was arrested on Saturday near Berlin, suspected of planning a terrorist attack on the Israeli embassy in Germany.

Ties to Terrorist Organization

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the man is believed to have ties to the terrorist organization Daesh (ISIS). Authorities suspect him of supporting the group and preparing an attack on the embassy, which could have had serious consequences.

The arrest followed a large-scale police operation in Bernau, a town near Berlin, involving special forces. Law enforcement officials also searched the suspect’s residence as part of the operation.

According to Ziare, the German authorities were tipped off by foreign intelligence agencies, which provided critical information about the potential attack.

Ramped Up Security

Ron Prosor, Israel’s ambassador to Germany, thanked German authorities on social media for ensuring the safety of the Israeli diplomatic mission in Berlin. His message was posted on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the importance of continued vigilance and cooperation between nations.

The arrest comes amid increased security concerns in Germany following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel, which has heightened global awareness of Islamist terrorism and rising antisemitism.

In response to these threats, Germany, like many other countries, has ramped up security measures around Jewish institutions and Israeli embassies.

This is not the first time Germany has faced threats linked to Islamist extremism. In early September 2023, Munich police shot and killed an Austrian man with connections to radical Islam as he was preparing an attack on the Israeli Consulate.
