Just weeks after Elon Musk's Tesla revealed its Cybercab, Chinese competitors WeRide have raised the stakes with a larger, more spacious robotaxi.

Can Handle Heavy Traffic

WeRide, one of China's leading autonomous transport companies, has unveiled the GXR, touted as the most spacious robotaxi in the world.

The GXR, developed using WeRide's in-house hardware and software, offers an unprecedented level of passenger comfort with a focus on safety and advanced technology, according to Profit.

The vehicle is equipped with the Sensor Suite 5.6 system, which includes more than 20 sensors such as high-performance LiDAR, high-definition cameras, and an advanced navigation system that provides a 360-degree view.

This setup ensures that the GXR can handle heavy traffic, mixed road conditions, and high-speed driving, even at night. The robotaxi also boasts a high level of redundancy in its systems, from the chassis to the braking systems, to prevent malfunctions and protect passengers.

Operated in Public for 1,800 Days

One standout feature of the GXR is its design, which eliminates the front passenger seat, maximizing cabin space. The vehicle measures 5,018 mm in length with an interior cabin height of 1,340 mm, making it one of the most spacious robotaxis available.

Additionally, the vehicle’s side-sliding doors, combined with a hidden B-pillar, allow for an entrance width of 1,831 mm, providing easier access for passengers with luggage.

WeRide has accumulated over 1,800 days of public operation, primarily in China and the Middle East, where it runs the largest robotaxi fleet. The GXR can be booked via the company's app, allowing passengers to set pick-up and drop-off points for short trips or longer family vacations.

While Tesla has fallen behind in the robotaxi race, with its Cybercab project stalling, WeRide is setting a new standard for the industry, alongside other leaders like Waymo and VW.
