August 2024 has been declared the second deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine this year, with 184 people killed and 856 injured due to Russian military aggression.

These numbers were published by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

The surge in casualties was mainly caused by mass casualty incidents in Kostiantynivka and Kharkiv, as well as daily shelling along the front lines, particularly in the Donetsk region.

The UN report revealed that 91% of civilian casualties and 95% of the damage to educational and healthcare facilities occurred in areas controlled by the Ukrainian government.

In Russian-occupied territories, 10 civilians were killed and 84 injured during the same period.

In addition to the human toll, large-scale damage was inflicted on critical infrastructure. Thirteen educational institutions were destroyed, and 38 were damaged. Two medical facilities were completely destroyed, while 28 others sustained damage.

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the total civilian death toll has reached 11,743, with 24,614 people injured, according to UN estimates.

The majority of casualties in August were the result of missile, bomb, and artillery strikes, with landmines accounting for two deaths.
