A Greek court has acquitted two men accused of the 2021 murder of crime journalist George Karaivaz.

On Wednesday, a Greek court acquitted two men who were charged with the 2021 murder of George Karaivaz, a prominent crime journalist whose death shocked the nation.

Karaivaz was a 53-year-old veteran journalist known for his crime investigations on private broadcaster STAR TV and other media outlets.

He was fatally shot by two men on a motorbike near his home in Alimos, south of Athens, in April 2021.

Reuters reports that in a majority ruling, the seven-judge criminal court concluded that prosecutors had failed to prove the guilt of the two defendants beyond a reasonable doubt.

The accused, brothers aged 49 and 41, maintained their innocence and pleaded not guilty to the charges of intentional murder.

During the trial, prosecutors suggested that Karaivaz's death was connected to revelations he was allegedly planning to make about organized crime networks operating in Greece.

Despite these allegations, the court found insufficient evidence to convict the two men, leading to their acquittal.

The decision brings a controversial case to a close, though it leaves many questions unanswered regarding the motive and perpetrators behind the killing of a journalist who was well-known for his investigative work.
