At the BRICS summit in Kazan, top representatives of the BRICS states gathered to discuss international cooperation, with Russia's position and the ongoing war in Ukraine taking center stage.
The European Union sharply criticized the summit, accusing President Vladimir Putin of using the meeting to demonstrate that Russia is not internationally isolated despite Western sanctions and the war in Ukraine.
Peter Stano, spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, called on all summit participants to press Putin to end the war immediately.
According to Welt, the participation of UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also stirred tensions.
The EU criticized Erdogan’s presence, noting that as a candidate for EU membership, Turkey must align its foreign policy more closely with European positions.
Ukraine voiced concerns about the stance of certain BRICS nations but emphasized that the summit still showed that many countries worldwide remain supportive of Ukraine.
