Jack Teixeira, a former member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for leaking classified military documents related to Russia’s war in Ukraine, according to the Associated Press.
The leaked documents, containing sensitive information on troop movements and supplies, were shared on Discord, a social media platform where Teixeira had a small online group.
He created a private group to exchange classified data with friends, sharing military and intelligence materials related to Ukraine.
The 22-year-old Teixeira pleaded guilty in March 2024 to six counts of willfully retaining and transmitting national defense information under the Espionage Act. Prosecutors argued that his actions endangered U.S. national security, put military personnel at risk, and strained relationships with allies.
During sentencing, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani underscored the seriousness of the breach, describing it as one of the most significant leaks in U.S. history. Acting U.S. Attorney Josh Levy stated that Teixeira’s actions caused “incredible damage” and reinforced that anyone compromising national security will face severe consequences.
Teixeira’s defense argued that he had no intent to harm the U.S., claiming he only sought to inform his friends about global events. However, prosecutors insisted that his actions were premeditated and caused lasting damage to national security.
The leaks revealed sensitive military assessments, including intelligence on the war in Ukraine, spurring heightened efforts to secure classified information. As a cyber transport systems specialist, Teixeira had access to classified materials. He attempted to cover his tracks before his arrest by disposing of devices, including a tablet and laptop.
