The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) opened fire on Thursday near the village of Markaba in southern Lebanon, targeting Lebanese troops. According to a report by the Associated Press, two individuals were injured in the incident.
The IDF stated on its Telegram channel that "a group of suspicious individuals arrived in vehicles" within a restricted zone in southern Lebanon, violating the ceasefire agreement.
The military responded by firing in their direction and reiterated its commitment to combating ceasefire violations.
The incident comes just one day after hostilities between the IDF and Hezbollah ended on November 27.
Under the ceasefire terms, Hezbollah forces agreed to withdraw approximately 40 kilometers from the Israeli-Lebanese border, with the Lebanese army assuming control of the areas.
Despite the agreement, IDF spokesperson Avichai Adraei urged residents of southern Lebanese villages to avoid returning to their homes. He stated that IDF units remain in position and will provide updates on when it is safe to re-enter the areas.
The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has pledged to maintain its presence in the region.
Spokesperson Andre Tenenti told LBCI that UN peacekeepers will continue working to stabilize the situation, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. They will also support the Lebanese military's deployment in border areas.
