A serious Listeria outbreak has led to the recall of over 7 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat products, including deli meats, kielbasa, and cheese from Boar’s Head and Old Country brands, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The recall was first prompted by contamination concerns.

Now the recall has expanded to include products sold across the U.S. and in other countries like the Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Panama.

What Products Are Affected?

The recall covers a wide range of meat products, including Boar’s Head cheese, sausage, kielbasa, and various deli meats, as well as Old Country ham.

These products were found to be contaminated with Listeria bacteria.

The recalled items have a "sell by" date between July 29, 2024, and October 17, 2024, and may have the establishment number “EST. 12612” printed on them.

Why Is This Serious?

Listeria infection, known as listeriosis, can be very dangerous, especially for people with weak immune systems, pregnant women, older adults, and young children.

Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, headaches, confusion, and seizures.

So far, the outbreak has caused 34 reported illnesses in 13 states, leading to 33 hospitalizations and two deaths.

If you have any of the recalled products, you should not eat them.

What Should You Do?

If you have any of the recalled Boar’s Head or Old Country products, throw them away immediately. If you have already eaten these products and feel sick, contact your doctor right away.

For more information or questions about the recall, you can contact Boar’s Head Provisions Co., Inc. at 1-800-352-6277.

This recall is a reminder to always be aware of food safety. Make sure to check your fridge and take steps to protect your health.
