Latvia is stepping up its military support for Ukraine by delivering 1,500 combat drones, Defense Minister Andris Spruds announced on April 1.

The shipment is part of a larger commitment to strengthen Ukraine’s drone warfare capabilities.

“Two Latvian companies will deliver a total of 12,000 drones worth €17 million to Ukraine in the first half of this year,” Spruds wrote on X.

Backed by a Global Coalition

The drone deliveries are part of the international drone coalition, an allied initiative launched in January 2024 and co-led by Latvia and the United Kingdom.

The goal is to boost Ukraine’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) capabilities, which have become a vital part of modern warfare.

By the end of last year, nearly 20 countries had joined the coalition, showing strong global support for Ukraine’s defense.

Latvia has committed to sending military aid equal to 0.25% of its GDP every year, making it one of Ukraine’s most reliable supporters.

Thousands of drones are included in that commitment.

In addition to foreign support, Ukraine has been increasing its own production of drones. In December 2024, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said that over 96% of the UAVs used by Ukraine’s military last year were domestically produced.
