President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans for a potential meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, no specific timeline for the talks has been provided, according to Reuters on January 10.
“He wants to meet, and we are setting it up,” Trump said during a meeting with Republican governors at Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
“President Putin wants to meet. He has even said so publicly, and we need to end that war. It’s a bloody mess,” he added, referring to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
Under President Joe Biden’s administration, the United States has provided over $175 billion in aid to Ukraine, including $60 billion for military assistance.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed support for Trump’s intention to hold talks but noted that no official request for a meeting had been made.
“It would be more appropriate to wait until he takes office,” Peskov said.
Keith Kellogg, Trump’s nominee for special envoy to Ukraine, recently emphasized that the incoming president does not intend to make concessions to Putin. Kellogg stated that Trump remains committed to supporting Ukraine and ensuring its survival.
