Christmas Day brought a flurry of unconventional ideas from President-elect Donald Trump.
Sharing his thoughts on Truth Social, he posted about U.S. ambitions that ranged from retaking the Panama Canal to annexing Canada and purchasing Greenland.
While some dismissed his comments as playful musings, others noted the echoes of past policy goals that Trump has floated before, according to Hotnews.
Govenor Trudeau
In one post, Trump turned his focus to Canada.
He referred to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “governor” and suggested that if Canada became the 51st state, taxes would drop by 60%, businesses would double in size, and the nation would benefit from unmatched U.S. military protection.
Trump also claimed to have encouraged hockey legend Wayne Gretzky to run for prime minister, a suggestion Gretzky reportedly declined.
This wasn’t Trump’s first mention of annexing Canada.
During a recent dinner with Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago, he allegedly joked about making Canada a state.
Next on his wishlist was Greenland. Trump referred to the autonomous Danish territory as essential for U.S. national security.
Greenland’s government dismissed his remarks, much as they did in 2019 when he floated the idea of purchasing the island. Trump’s interest reflects Greenland’s strategic location and its potential as a resource hub in the Arctic.
The Panama Canal was another target. Trump criticized the high fees charged to U.S. ships and called for reasserting American control.
The canal, a crucial shipping route built by the U.S. in the early 20th century, was fully handed over to Panama in 1999 under a longstanding treaty.
Trump’s comments suggested he viewed the current arrangement as disadvantageous to American interests.
