Yesterday, Ukrainian drones launched a targeted attack on the Borisoglebsk military air base in Russia's Voronezh Oblast.

The attack resulted in the destruction of key hangars, dealing a significant blow to Russian military operations.

On August 14, Radio Svoboda published satellite images from Planet Labs that confirmed the drone strike on the northwestern part of the base, leading to the destruction of several hangars.

The targeted hangars were believed to house a technical and operational unit responsible for the repair and maintenance of aircraft.

Borisoglebsk air base is home to various aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces, including Su-25, Su-30, Su-34, and Su-35 jets.

Sources within Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) confirmed that this strike was part of the largest coordinated attack on Russian military air bases since the start of the war.

The operation targeted not only the Borisoglebsk base but also military airfields in Kursk and Savasleyka, which were hit on the same day.

According to these sources, the operation was carefully planned to prevent Russia from using these air bases to launch strikes against Ukrainian front lines and cities.

The Ukrainian Air Force noted that the Savasleyka base, located about 600 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, hosts MiG-31K aircraft, which are carriers of the Kinzhal missiles used in Russian attacks on Ukraine.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported shooting down 117 drones and four tactical missiles during the attack, although local reports confirmed strikes at the Borisoglebsk and Baltimore air bases in Voronezh, as well as at Savasleyka in the Nizhny Novgorod region.

The FIRMS fire tracking system indicated that fires broke out on the territory of the Russian air base as the drones likely hit munitions depots.

The attack in the Voronezh region reportedly began around 10:00 p.m. Moscow time on August 13, 2024.
