The Ukrainian Legion, a volunteer military unit designed to bolster Ukraine’s defenses, has received over 1,000 applications from individuals eager to join.
This was confirmed by Ukraine's Ambassador to Poland, Vasyl Bodnar, during an interview with Suspilne on December 22.
Recruitment Progress
Launched in July as a joint initiative between Ukraine and Poland, the Ukrainian Legion has quickly gained momentum.
Recruitment began in earnest in October with the opening of a center in Lublin, Poland. The first phase of training is already underway, with new contracts signed with the Ukrainian Armed Forces and a second recruitment wave scheduled for January.
Ambassador Bodnar highlighted Poland's critical role in the project.
The Polish Armed Forces are providing basic military training for recruits, followed by advanced training tailored to individual specializations. Once their training is complete, legion members are deployed to military units in Ukraine, where they operate under Ukrainian command.
“Poland recognizes the strategic importance of this initiative for both Ukraine and Europe as a whole,” Bodnar emphasized.
International Interest
Interest in the Ukrainian Legion extends far beyond Poland.
In November, over 500 applications were submitted from citizens of 30 countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States.
While most applicants are men under 25, a noteworthy number of women have also applied, seeking roles in medical and combat capacities.
The Ukrainian Legion exemplifies the deep collaboration between Ukraine and Poland.
The two nations have worked closely to ensure recruits are equipped with the necessary training, resources, and logistical support. Bodnar noted that the creation of the legion underscores Poland's commitment to supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
