Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has responded to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico’s recent remarks, in which Fico called him “an enemy of Slovakia” and argued that restoring Russian gas transit is the only practical solution for Slovakia.
In a statement on January 28, Zelenskyy warned about the risks of relying on Russian energy, calling Fico’s stance a mistake that goes against Europe’s broader goals of independence and sovereignty.
“American LNG is bought with money, but Russian gas costs not just money—it also costs independence and sovereignty,” Zelenskyy said. “Many in Europe have learned this and chosen to protect their sovereignty.”
Commenting on Fico’s position, Zelenskyy added, “He is choosing Moscow over America and other partners who offer gas on commercial terms. This is his mistake.”
The Ukrainian leader also stressed the need for European nations to build strong partnerships for long-term security and prosperity.
“All of Europe must think ahead and develop relationships that strengthen our nations,” he said.
