A couple in Northern California got the surprise of their lives while walking their dog in their garden.
They stumbled upon a rusty can under a tree and initially thought it was some sort of antique artifact. However, they were in for another shock.
The can contained gold coins, both valuable in currency and historically, estimated to date back to 1847.
Don Kagin, an experienced antique coin collector, commented on the extraordinary find, saying,
"It's like they've found the gold at the end of the rainbow."
The man who discovered the can described the moment as surreal and initially found it hard to believe. He even joked that he expected an old miner with a mule to appear at any moment.
The couple has since sold most of the gold coins on Amazon's collectibles website and donated a portion of the proceeds to the homeless in their local area.
They also paid 47% of the total sum to tax authorities.
