At a swimming pool in Austria, a lifeguard decided to take matters into his own hands when a young boy hesitated to jump off a diving board.
The incident was captured on video and has since sparked discussions about the lifeguard's actions.
We've all been there—standing at the edge of a diving board, gathering the courage to take the plunge. For one young boy in Austria, this moment of hesitation caught the attention of a lifeguard who was seemingly tired of waiting for the diving board to become available.
A push over the edge
The video shows the young boy clinging to the railing at the top of the diving board, visibly nervous about making the jump. The lifeguard, however, was not willing to wait.
He used his leg to nudge the boy closer and closer to the edge until the boy could no longer hold on.
While it's unclear how the boy felt after being pushed into the water, witnesses say the lifeguard took this action after the boy had ignored requests from two different lifeguards to come down.
Steyrer Stadtbades, the local authority responsible for the swimming pool, later confirmed that the lifeguard in the video was their employee and expressed regret over the incident.
In a statement, the authority said, "A lifeguard's job is to ensure the safety of customers. It is very unfortunate that the lifeguard was involved in this incident. We are doing everything we can to clarify the circumstances."
