EU Council Approves Security Agreement with Ukraine

The Council of the European Union, representing the member states of the EU, has approved a security agreement with Ukraine.

According to Hotnews the agreement is set to be signed this week during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Brussels.

This announcement was made to the press following a meeting of the European Affairs ministers from the 27 member states by Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib. Belgium is concluding its six-month presidency of the EU Council, which Hungary will take over on July 1, as reported by EFE and Agerpres.

EU ambassadors reached a political agreement on Monday regarding the security commitments that will provide Ukraine with greater safety and predictability from the EU in the long term amid its ongoing war with Russia. The signing of the agreement is anticipated to occur this week during President Zelensky's visit to Brussels.

Security Commitments and Military Assistance

In recent months, Ukraine has secured several bilateral security agreements with EU and NATO member states, including the United States.

These agreements, which often include secret annexes, see Ukraine's allies committing to provide military aid and other forms of assistance.

This support encompasses bolstering Ukraine's military industry, training Ukrainian soldiers, cooperation in information transfer, and enhancing cyber defense.

These arrangements aim to help Ukraine withstand the ongoing conflict with Russia and offer provisional security guarantees as the country eyes potential NATO membership.
