President Joe Biden has suggested that Washington may lift restrictions on Ukraine's use of long-range American missiles against Russia.
Can Lead to Serious Problems
If approved, this would fulfill Ukraine’s long-standing requests to loosen limits on U.S. weapons supplies, which Kyiv claims have restricted their ability to fight Russia’s large-scale invasion. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously warned that such actions could lead to "very serious problems."
Biden’s comments come as U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Minister David Lammy prepare to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. Blinken has emphasized the importance of hearing directly from Ukrainian leaders about their objectives and what further support they need, according to Digi24.
The meeting follows discussions between Blinken and Lammy in London, where Blinken accused Iran of supplying Russia with short-range ballistic missiles, which could be used against Ukraine within weeks.
Completely Irrational
Ukraine has consistently called for more robust military aid, including long-range missile systems, to defend itself from Russian forces. Until now, the U.S. has been cautious about providing weapons capable of striking targets deep within Russian territory, fearing it could escalate the conflict.
Other allies, such as the UK, have also provided Ukraine with long-range weapons, though there are limits on their use within Russia to prevent provoking a wider war or nuclear conflict.
Russian officials were quick to react to Biden’s remarks. Russian State Duma Deputy Mikhail Sheremet criticized the U.S. president’s suggestion, calling Biden’s discussions about striking Russian territory "completely irrational," according to URA
Sheremet warned that such discussions represent a serious threat and accused Biden of seeking to destroy peaceful coexistence. He urged the American people to remove Biden from office to avoid a global conflict, emphasizing that there are limits to aggression. Sheremet also noted that the use of long-range weapons by Ukraine would force Russia to take strong measures to protect its citizens and territory.
