The film world has long celebrated the work of Paul Schrader. His name is tied to classics like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and American Gigolo.

But now, the 78-year-old director and screenwriter is facing serious accusations that could overshadow his legacy.

A former assistant, who is using the name Jane Doe in court, has accused Schrader of sexual assault, according to Ziare. She also says she was fired after rejecting his advances.

The two reportedly reached a private agreement to settle the matter. That included a cash payment. But Schrader later decided he could not go through with it.

Jane Doe has now filed a lawsuit against Schrader and his production company. She wants the court to enforce the original agreement.

Her lawyer said this case is about making sure Schrader keeps his promise.

Schrader’s attorney has responded by calling the lawsuit false and opportunistic.

He said there was never any sexual relationship between Schrader and Doe. He also said Schrader never tried to start one.

The lawsuit reveals events that were meant to stay private. According to the documents, while attending the Cannes Film Festival in 2023, Schrader invited Doe to his hotel room.

She says he grabbed her arms and kissed her without consent. Two days later, she says Schrader begged her to help him pack.

When she arrived, he opened the door wearing only a robe. He was naked underneath.

Doe says she was fired in September after rejecting him again. Schrader later emailed her saying he feared she saw him as “a Harvey Weinstein.”

Weinstein is the Hollywood producer convicted of rape who is awaiting a new trial.

The lawsuit also says Schrader agreed to settle in February. But the director later said he couldn’t live with that decision.

Doe worked for Schrader for three years. During that time, she praised him online and called him a mentor.

Schrader has written and directed many films over the decades. In 2017, he received an Oscar nomination for First Reformed.

The case is now in the hands of a New York court.
