An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 struck the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, killing at least 53 people and injuring more than 60, according to the Chinese Seismological Center.

The earthquake occurred on Tuesday at 9:05 a.m. local time in Tingri County. The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Tibet Autonomous Region, situated in a seismically active area along the Himalayan belt, is no stranger to earthquakes. The region’s geological activity frequently results in tremors, with varying degrees of impact.

Interfax reports that search and rescue operations are still ongoing, with more than 1,500 rescuers deployed to the area.

Teams are working to locate survivors trapped under rubble while providing medical assistance to the injured.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged authorities to make every effort to conduct rescue operations, minimize casualties, provide aid to victims, and ensure safety for those impacted by the disaster.
