There are two major cheese recalls currently affecting consumers in the U.S. and Canada.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of multiple cheese brands due to a Staphylococcus aureus outbreak.

Cheese sold at Costco in the U.S. is also being recalled due to potential foreign matter contamination.

Canada

The CFIA has recalled various cheese products from brands Rumba, Sabana, and Sombrero due to contamination with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The affected products include:

  • Rumba Queso Campesino Country Cheese (lot number CA140524; best by date July 16, 2024)

  • Rumba Asadero Mexican Style Cheese (lot number CA140524; UPC 8 91911 00125 1; best by date July 16, 2024)

  • Rumba Queso Fresco Fresco Cheese (lot number QF140524; best by date July 14, 2024)

  • Rumba Campesino (lot number CA140524; best by date July 16, 2024)

  • Rumba Asadero (lot number CA140524; best by date July 16, 2024)

  • Sabana Queso Fresco Grilling Cheese (lot number CAE140524; UPC 627 843 776 413; best by date August 14, 2024)

  • Sombrero Asadero Grilling Cheese (lot number CA140524; UPC 628204378260; best by date July 16, 2024)

While no illnesses have been reported, Staphylococcus aureus bacteria can cause serious infections such as sepsis and pneumonia. If you experience symptoms like pimples, boils, or other skin conditions after consuming or handling these products, seek medical advice immediately.

The United States

Costco has issued a recall for:

  • 32-ounce twin-packs of Tillamook Colby Jack (best by date October 22, 2024)

  • Tillamook Monterey Jack cheese slices (best by date October 22, 2024)

This is due to possible contamination with gray and black plastic pieces. The recall was initiated following a company notice about the potential for foreign matter contamination.

What to Do

If you have any of the recalled cheese products:

  1. Do not consume them. Dispose of the products immediately.

  2. Seek medical attention if you experience any symptoms of illness or injury after consuming the recalled products.

  3. Return the products to the place of purchase for a refund.

By being vigilant and taking these precautions, you can help protect your health and avoid potential risks associated with these contaminated cheese products.
