A tragic hunting accident occurred on Sunday, December 10, in Thio, a town in New Caledonia located on the east coast of Grande Terre, in the South Province, about 120 kilometers north of Nouméa.
According to Outre-mer La Premiere, a father, out hunting with his children, saw the activity as an opportunity for quality family time.
However, the outing turned into a nightmare.
The father, now in police custody, accidentally shot his 3-year-old daughter.
Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the young girl
According to reports from Outre-mer La Première, the father experienced a problem with his firearm. However, nowhere is it described what problem the father had with his firearm, and how this could result in his 3-year-old daughter being shot.
Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the young girl, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and she passed away. The father has been taken into custody for involuntary manslaughter.
According to the accident report presented by the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB), there were 78 hunting accidents during the 2022-2023 season, including 6 fatalities (all hunters).
These figures continue to show a year-over-year decline.
