China has called for "calm and restraint" following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decree expanding the circumstances under which nuclear weapons could be used, according to Ziare.
The announcement came as tensions rise due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now in its 1,000th day.
At a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged all parties to "remain calm and exercise restraint," emphasizing the need to de-escalate through dialogue and consultation.
“China’s position remains unchanged: all parties should focus on de-escalation and work toward a political resolution to the Ukrainian crisis,” Lin stated.
Putin’s decree, signed Tuesday, comes shortly after the U.S. authorized Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS missiles on Russian territory.
This move has further strained international relations, with the Russian leader previously warning that attacks by non-nuclear states, supported by nuclear powers, could be interpreted as a "joint aggression," potentially warranting a nuclear response.
The revision of Russia’s nuclear doctrine has been strongly criticized by Western nations. It underscores heightened fears about the escalation of the conflict into a nuclear confrontation.
Observers noted that Putin’s decision aligns with his ongoing rhetoric aimed at deterring Western support for Ukraine.
China’s response reflects its consistent stance of advocating for dialogue and opposing measures that could lead to further escalation.
Beijing, while maintaining close ties with Moscow, has also positioned itself as a proponent of a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
This development highlights the urgent need for global efforts to stabilize the region and prevent further deterioration of the conflict.
The international community continues to monitor these events closely as the stakes grow higher.
