Hunter Biden will plead guilty to federal tax evasion charges, his lawyer revealed to the BBC just before his trial was set to begin, writes BBC News.
Biden had previously denied allegations that he failed to pay $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019, but his attorney, Marc Garagos, confirmed the change in plea. A judge will still need to approve the plea agreement.
This development could result in Biden’s second criminal conviction this year. In June, he was convicted of charges involving gun possession and drug use, making him the first sitting U.S. president's son to be criminally convicted.
Biden had earlier sought to have the case dismissed, arguing that the investigation by the Department of Justice was politically driven.
Unfairly targeted?
He claimed he was unfairly targeted because Republican lawmakers are pushing to impeach his father, President Joe Biden.
Jury selection was already underway in Los Angeles when the announcement was made. Biden’s decision to change his plea in the tax case introduces a new turn in his legal challenges, with the court’s acceptance of the plea still pending.
The outcome of this case could further complicate the legal issues surrounding the president's son.
