Spain is on the brink of recognizing Palestine as a sovereign state within the coming weeks, according to official sources speaking to the EFE agency.
The Spanish government will proceed with this decision regardless of whether other European Union countries align with Madrid’s position.
Diplomatic Efforts and EU Discussions
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been actively discussing the potential recognition with fellow European leaders, particularly during recent meetings in Brussels. Despite these discussions, Spain appears ready to proceed with its decision independently.
This initiative has historical backing from the Spanish Parliament, which showed support for Palestinian recognition as early as 2014. Recent polls also suggest that a majority of the Spanish public supports recognizing Palestine.
Sánchez indicated that the recognition would be formalized before the end of the current six-month period ending in July, though sources suggest the announcement could come even sooner.
In his recent visits across the EU, Sánchez has been advocating for the recognition of a Palestinian state. During an EU summit in Brussels on Wednesday, he met with Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela and Luxembourg's Luke Frieden to further discuss the matter.
Norway has also expressed readiness to recognize a Palestinian state, though the timeline for such a decision remains unclear.
