A Russian airstrike on the city of Zaporizhzhia on October 1 killed one person and injured seven others, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack targeted residential areas, leaving extensive damage in its wake.
Ivan Fedorov, Chief of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, first reported the incident on Telegram, stating that Russian aerial bombs had struck the city. "Russians attacked Zaporizhzhia with aerial bombs.
Currently: six wounded and one killed," he wrote, according to Ukrinform.
The casualty toll was later updated by the State Emergency Service (SES), which reported seven injured. Rescue workers have been conducting search and rescue operations at the scene, working to free those trapped in the rubble.
Severe Damage to Residential Areas
The SES confirmed that the airstrike had partially destroyed the upper floors of a 15-story building, damaging the facade and causing significant structural damage. Additionally, 25 cars were damaged in the blast, and nearby private homes and outbuildings also suffered extensive harm.
Several fires broke out following the attack, and emergency responders were dispatched to contain the blazes. "Rescue workers freed two people trapped in an elevator, who later declined hospitalization after medical assessment," the SES reported.
As of 1 a.m. local time, rescue operations were ongoing, and officials warned that the number of victims could still rise as they continue to assess the damage.
Increased Attacks on Zaporizhzhia
This airstrike is part of a recent wave of attacks on Zaporizhzhia, as Russian forces continue to target residential and infrastructure areas. Earlier in the day, two people were initially reported injured following attacks on other parts of the city.
Zaporizhzhia, located near the front lines, has faced frequent bombardment throughout Russia's full-scale invasion, making it one of the most heavily targeted cities in Ukraine.
