French authorities have detained a Russian man suspected of planning activities aimed at destabilizing the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
Not Terrorism
According to Hotnews the arrest was confirmed by the Paris prosecutor's office, following an investigation into potential threats linked to the 2024 Summer Olympics. The suspect, identified as a 39-year-old Russian national born in May 1984, was apprehended after a search of his Paris residence uncovered materials indicating a plot to disrupt the games.
The investigation has not been classified as a terrorism-related probe, as the suspect's intentions are not believed to involve terrorist activities. Instead, officials suggest that the plot may have involved actions to promote pro-Russian sentiments and create unrest in France during the international event.
A Million Checks
The case has heightened concerns among French officials as the country prepares to host the Olympic Games from July 26 to August 11, with the Paralympic Games to follow from August 28 to September 8.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin has revealed that over a million administrative checks have been conducted on various individuals connected to the games, including athletes, coaches, journalists, volunteers, security personnel, and residents near event venues.
As a result, 4,360 people have been barred from the games, including 880 excluded due to suspicions of foreign interference.
The arrest of the Russian national comes amidst heightened security measures and vigilance against potential threats. French intelligence officials have expressed concerns about possible external attempts to exploit social and political tensions within the country, particularly those related to recent international conflicts.
In recent months, several incidents in France have raised suspicions of foreign influence, including actions that appear designed to incite public discord.
