The cycling world is in mourning after the sudden death of 20-year-old Dutch cyclist Mark Groeneveld. Groeneveld was in Hong Kong to participate in the Hong Kong Cyclothon on Sunday.
His Canadian team, XSpeed United Continental, announced on Monday afternoon that Groeneveld passed away early Monday morning.
The cause of death is currently under investigation, but it is suspected that Groeneveld died of a heart attack. "It is with heavy hearts that we must inform you that Mark Groeneveld has passed away on a trip to Hong Kong." a statement from his Candian team says according to Cyclingnews.

On Monday, October 23, XSU (the team) and the world lost a wonderful soul," XSpeed United Continental stated in an Instagram post.
The team extended their deepest condolences to Groeneveld's family, teammates, and friends, acknowledging the emotional toll of this tragic event.
"We understand that this is an incredibly difficult time, and we encourage you to reach out if you need help or emotional support," the team added.
Groeneveld had only been with XSpeed United Continental for a year, having previously raced for the British team Holdsworth Zappi.
"Mark was an incredible person and a valued member of our team. He had a remarkable soul, always ready to lend a hand behind the scenes with his infectious smile and warm-hearted nature. His presence brightened our days, and he will be deeply missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him," the team said.
The team concluded their post by urging everyone to take care of themselves and each other during this difficult time. "Mark will never be forgotten by us," XSpeed United Continental said.
