Trade routes have always been vital to the United States’ economy and defense strategies.

Among them, the Panama Canal holds a special place. For over a century, it has been a critical link, enabling faster shipping and naval mobility between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

But now, President-elect Donald Trump is taking aim at the management of the canal and what he views as unfair practices.

A Vital National Asset

Speaking on his social media platform, Trump labeled the toll fees imposed by Panama as “ridiculous” and claimed they undermine the historic relationship between the two nations.

He criticized past U.S. leaders, specifically pointing to the late 1970s transfer of canal control to Panama under President Jimmy Carter, according to El Economista.

According to Trump, this decision disregarded the immense cost and sacrifices made by the U.S. during the canal’s construction.

Trump’s remarks carried a clear demand. He stated that if current agreements aren’t honored in a way that benefits the U.S., he would push for the canal’s full return.

“It wasn’t handed over for others’ gain,” he said, describing the canal as a "vital national asset" crucial to America’s trade and military.

He didn’t stop at history. Trump underscored the modern significance of the canal, noting that over 70% of its traffic involves U.S.-bound goods.

He also highlighted its importance for the U.S. Navy’s rapid deployment capabilities, calling the canal “essential for national security.”

Beyond policy, Trump evoked the human cost of the canal’s construction. Tens of thousands of American workers lost their lives to disease during the project, a point he used to emphasize the canal’s value.
