On September 9, the Kraków District Court will begin the trial of two Russians accused of being members of the Wagner Group, a notorious Russian paramilitary organization. This was reported by the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

The two men, identified as Alexey T. and Andrey G., face serious charges, including participating in an international armed organization and conducting activities on behalf of a foreign intelligence agency.

The Wagner Group is widely recognized as a Russian mercenary association. It has been involved in various global conflicts, including Russia's invasions of Ukraine in 2014 and 2022, as well as operations in Syria, Sudan, Libya, and the Central African Republic.

The group is also known for its ties to the Russian government and its involvement in acts of terrorism and war crimes.

According to the Małopolska Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime, which filed the indictment in June, the two Russian nationals are charged with recruiting individuals in Poland for mercenary military service within the Wagner Group.

Such activities are prohibited under international law.

The prosecution alleges that the accused were actively recruiting in Kraków and Warsaw by distributing hundreds of recruitment stickers, which provided contact information for those interested in joining the Wagner Group.

In addition to recruitment, the defendants are accused of working for the Russian Federation's intelligence agency, the GRU. Their alleged activities included conducting hybrid warfare and propaganda efforts designed to destabilize Poland's political situation.

The two men were apprehended by Poland's Internal Security Agency in Warsaw in August 2023. If convicted, they could face up to 10 years in prison.

The trial is expected to attract significant attention due to the ongoing tensions between Russia and Western countries, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine and concerns over Russian espionage and influence operations in Europe.
