Belgium has pledged €150 million ($165 million) to support the reconstruction of civilian and energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts, the Ukrainian government announced on August 30.

This significant aid forms part of Belgium’s broader efforts to aid Ukraine's recovery from the impacts of the ongoing conflict with Russia.

The funding will focus on rebuilding critical infrastructure in these regions, which have faced extensive damage from Russian attacks since the start of the full-scale invasion.

The commitment was formalized through agreements signed by Vasyl Shkurakov, Ukraine’s acting minister for communities, territories, and infrastructure, and Dirk Desprez, the resident representative of the Enabel Belgian Development Agency in Ukraine.

The memorandums outline a comprehensive plan for reconstructing and renovating facilities, including schools, hospitals, and energy systems. The agreements also include provisions for building shelters and implementing backup power and heating systems to enhance resilience against future disruptions.

In addition to this aid, Belgium and Ukraine have strengthened their partnership through a bilateral security deal signed in May.

Under this agreement, Belgium will provide at least €977 million ($1 billion) in military assistance to Ukraine over the next year, demonstrating its ongoing support for Ukraine’s defense efforts.

This financial support from Belgium underscores the continued international commitment to aiding Ukraine’s recovery and resilience amid the ongoing conflict.
