Tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to manifest in unexpected and alarming ways.
This time, Moscow has raised accusations against Kyiv, claiming its intelligence services orchestrated a wave of arson attacks and explosions across Russia.
The incidents, which targeted administrative buildings, police vehicles, and public institutions, have sparked a nationwide investigation.
Tricked by Lost Funds
According to Russia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, 55 such attacks occurred between December 18 and 26. Authorities have arrested 44 suspects they claim were manipulated by Ukrainian operatives.
The ministry alleges that these recruits — often described as pensioners, students, or teenagers — were coerced or incentivized through promises of money.
In some cases, suspects were reportedly tricked into believing they would recover lost funds only if they participated in these operations, according to Digi24.
Russian officials assert that the perpetrators were directed remotely through phone calls or online messaging apps. If convicted, those arrested could face up to 20 years in prison.
The attacks spanned several regions, including Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Siberia.
They caused damage to government offices, police vehicles, banks, and post offices. Footage released by Russian media showed charred buildings and vehicles, offering a glimpse into the scale of destruction.
Russia’s claims, however, come against a backdrop of increasing internal crackdowns. Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, charges of treason, terrorism, and sabotage have surged in Russia.
Human rights organizations and independent media allege that confessions in many cases are obtained through torture or threats.
This latest narrative from Moscow fits into a broader strategy of attributing domestic unrest to external enemies.
Critics argue it is a convenient way to justify harsh measures against dissent and to maintain control during a protracted and costly war.
The accusations also raise questions about the extent of Ukraine’s involvement. While Ukrainian intelligence has not commented on the claims, such tactics align with the unconventional warfare strategies employed throughout the conflict.
