Moscow's war in Ukraine has been ongoing for more than 1,000 days.
The situation is constantly changing, and now Russia is facing a serious setback, according to Ziare.
A high-ranking Russian general, Valery Gerasimov, who is the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, has admitted that the Russian army will not be able to push Ukraine out of the Kursk region by the end of 2023.
This marks a significant failure for Russia.Putin had previously set an ambitious deadline to remove Ukrainian forces from Kursk by October, but that deadline has now passed without success.
Gerasimov's admission reveals the growing struggles of Russia’s military. The general stated that all of Russia’s military goals for 2024 had been met.
However, this leaves the question of what Russia's real objectives are now.
For months, Russian forces had focused on reclaiming Kursk, but Ukraine's position in the region is still strong.
Gerasimov argued that Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk in August was a strategy to make an impact on Western support for Ukraine.
He claimed that Ukraine’s advances were halted and that Russian forces are still working to “liberate” the area from Ukrainian troops and foreign mercenaries.
After Ukraine’s push into Kursk, Putin emphasized the need to remove all enemy forces from Russian territory.
He had set the deadline of October 1 to achieve this goal. Since then, there has been intense fighting in the region.
Russia has even deployed more than 11,000 North Korean soldiers to help fight in Kursk.
Despite Russia’s efforts, they have not been able to fully regain control of the area. Russian forces have managed to recapture about 40% of the land Ukraine occupied, but this came at a heavy cost.
Russia’s casualties have risen to 700,000, and losses of military equipment, including armored vehicles, have reached alarming levels.
The UK Ministry of Defence recently released satellite images showing Russia’s reliance on outdated Soviet-era equipment, further highlighting the difficulties Russia is facing in the war.
