The war in Ukraine has led to a surprising shift. Many Russian citizens have chosen to fight for Ukraine, opposing the very government they come from, reports Ziare.
Piotr Verzilov, a Canadian activist with Russian roots, shared this information on January 1, 2025.
Verzilov, known for being part of the anti-Kremlin art group Pussy Riot, explained that he is not the only Russian to join the Ukrainian army.
Verzilov is one of the founders of Mediazona, an independent Russian news agency. He told Yury Dud, a popular Russian YouTuber, that there are many Russian citizens now fighting on the Ukrainian side.
These Russian fighters take on various roles in the Ukrainian defense forces. Verzilov, 37, said that his background was well known to the commanders and political leaders in Ukraine.
They did not have doubts about him when he decided to join.
Verzilov went to Ukraine in 2022, at the start of Russia's invasion, to film a documentary. He then joined the Ukrainian army.
His decision to fight for Ukraine is now leading to trouble with Russian authorities. The Federal Security Service (FSB) is investigating him for treason.
Verzilov had previously experienced a poisoning attempt. In 2018, he fell seriously ill after a hearing in Moscow.
German doctors later said it was likely he had been poisoned. He was flown to Berlin for treatment.
His symptoms included memory loss, vision problems, and trouble walking or speaking.
Verzilov is among several critics of the Kremlin who are believed to have been poisoned.
More and more Russians are speaking out against the war and their government. Verzilov’s story shows that opposition is growing, even among those from Russia’s own ranks.
As the war continues, many are choosing to stand with Ukraine rather than their own country.
