Sweden Commits SEK 500 Million to Strengthen Ukraine’s Energy Sector

Trending Now

The Swedish government has approved an additional SEK 500 million (nearly EUR 44 million) to bolster heating and electricity supplies in Ukraine, writes Ukrinform.

This funding, announced on the Swedish government's website, marks Sweden's largest single contribution to Ukraine's energy sector restoration.

According to World Bank estimates, this aid will provide electricity to approximately 185,000 people.

The ongoing Russian invasion has severely damaged Ukrainian infrastructure, particularly targeting energy facilities, leaving families, businesses, hospitals, and schools in distress.

Sweden's new support is designed to address the needs of Ukraine's most vulnerable populations, complementing the substantial aid Sweden has already provided to the country’s energy sector.

Helping Ukraine stabilizing

Johan Forssell, Sweden's Minister of International Development and Foreign Trade, highlighted the critical nature of this assistance, noting that it will help stabilize Ukraine's society and economy amidst increasing Russian attacks on key energy infrastructure.

The support includes funding for two gas turbines at the initial stage, aimed at generating electricity for hospitals and homes. These facilities will be protected to reduce the impact of Russian strikes.

The Swedish International Cooperation and Development Agency will oversee this initiative, which is a collaborative effort with Ukraine’s state energy company and other international financial institutions.

Ebba Busch, Sweden's Minister of Energy, Business, and Industry, emphasized that Sweden will continue its support for Ukraine’s energy needs as long as necessary.

This new contribution reflects Sweden's ongoing commitment to assisting Ukraine during the crisis.
