Ukrainian forces have reportedly encountered North Korean soldiers for the first time in Russia’s Kursk region.

A Brief Confrontation

The skirmish comes amid Ukraine’s counteroffensive, launched in August, aimed at reclaiming positions in Russian-held territory.

According to Digi24, elite North Korean soldiers sent by Kim Jong-un, known as the “Assault Corps” or “Black Berets,” are now deployed on the frontlines in Russia, marking a significant escalation of North Korea’s involvement.

Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine's Center for Countering Disinformation, provided details on these initial engagements.

He confirmed that Ukrainian forces recently clashed with North Korean troops during a reconnaissance mission in Kursk.

The Ukrainian soldiers were tasked with identifying enemy positions and launching targeted bombardments. While the confrontation was brief, it signals that North Korean forces are actively participating in combat.

Members of Elite Force

Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Rustem Umerov, also confirmed the engagement. He described it as a “short skirmish” but noted that the involvement of North Korean forces underscores the growing international dimension of the war.

Kovalenko further explained that Ukrainian intelligence had prior knowledge of North Korean soldiers arriving in Russia.

These troops reportedly wear Russian uniforms and have been integrated into Russian military units to avoid detection. They are being trained in real combat conditions to support Russia’s ongoing efforts.

North Korean soldiers deployed in Russia are reportedly members of an elite force, known for their specialized training.

However, these troops are unlikely to make a substantial impact on the battlefield, given their relatively small numbers and Russia's challenges in managing resources and logistics.
