The South China Sea continues to be a hotbed of tension between China and several nations, particularly the Philippines.

Near Chinese Military Installations

Recently, Beijing announced that it has taken "countermeasures" in response to what it claims was an incursion by two Philippine military aircraft into airspace over the contentious waters, according to L'independent.

The Philippine planes reportedly flew near the Nansha Islands, specifically over the Subi Reef, where Chinese military installations are established, according to statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry noted that on August 22, the aircraft entered airspace close to the islands and that China took necessary countermeasures "in accordance with the law."

Rich in Natural Resources

While the specifics of these countermeasures were not disclosed, they may involve aggressive tactics such as deploying fighter jets or activating air defense systems in the area.

The South China Sea is strategically vital, rich in natural resources, and is a crucial passage for international shipping routes. China claims nearly the entire region, a position that has been challenged by the global community.

A landmark ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 2016 invalidated many of China’s territorial claims; however, Beijing has persisted in bolstering its military presence and constructing infrastructure on various artificial islands.
