German automaker BMW AG has announced a significant recall affecting 6.5 million vehicles worldwide, compounding the company's recent challenges.

Problems With Airbag System

This recall follows earlier reports of issues with the braking system, which contributed to a downward adjustment in the company’s revenue targets.

The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) in Germany issued a notice on September 13, detailing the recall, which impacts over 1 million vehicles in Germany alone, according to Ziare.

The problem centers on the driver’s side airbag system, which can trigger unexpectedly, sending metal fragments that pose a serious risk to vehicle occupants. Tragically, these defects have already been linked to two incidents resulting in injuries or fatalities.

Wide Range of Vehicles

The affected models include a wide range of vehicles produced between 2003 and 2018, covering Series 1 through 6, as well as SUVs such as the X1, X3, X5, and X6.

Many of these vehicles were manufactured or equipped with steering wheels that contain components from Takata, a company previously embroiled in its own safety scandals.

This latest recall comes shortly after BMW revealed it would lower its sales targets for the year due to potential brake failures linked to Continental AG components, which led to an earlier recall of 1.5 million vehicles.

As BMW navigates these significant safety concerns, it underscores the importance of vehicle maintenance and prompt attention to manufacturer notices.
