Chinese-owned Volvo Cars has recognized that it likely can't outdo Tesla in charging solutions, so it’s joining Tesla’s NCAS charging standard.
Beginning January 1, 2025, all new Volvo models in the U.S. will come with Tesla's charging socket, and owners of older models will be able to purchase an adapter.
In a press release, Volvo stated that this decision is aimed at making the transition to electric cars easier for consumers.
“As part of our journey toward electrification, we want to make life with an electric car, including our new flagship EX90, as smooth as possible. Today, we're taking a big step to provide simple and convenient access to charging infrastructure for Volvo owners in the U.S. and Canada, furthering our commitment to electric vehicles," said Mike Cottone, director of Volvo Car North America.
With this agreement, Volvo joins other manufacturers such as Ford, General Motors, and Rivian, who have also partnered with Tesla.
Tesla’s Supercharger network is one of the most widespread and reliable in the United States, and access to this network is expected to make Volvo electric cars more appealing to consumers.
Older Volvo models will also be able to use Tesla's charging network through an adapter available from Volvo, ensuring that all Volvo owners, regardless of model, can benefit from the new agreement.
Meanwhile, Volvo and its parent company Geely may face challenges in the U.S., as the government is considering a ban on cars built in China, starting with software-related restrictions. The situation has reportedly angered Polestar.
