More than 212,000 pounds of liquid egg products have been recalled across multiple U.S. states due to potential contamination with a cleaning chemical, according to an alert from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The recall was announced by Cargill Kitchen Solutions.

It was issued after it was discovered that some batches of the liquid eggs may have been contaminated with a cleaning agent containing sodium hypochlorite — a substance commonly found in bleach-based disinfectants.

What Products Are Affected?

The recalled egg substitutes were produced on March 12 and 13, 2025, and include several popular brands. The products are labeled with establishment number “G1804” and include:

  • Egg Beaters Original Liquid Egg Substitute – 32 oz carton, use-by date: AUG 10 2025

  • Egg Beaters Cage-Free Original Liquid Egg Substitute – 32 oz carton, use-by date: AUG 09 2025

  • Egg Beaters Cage-Free Original Frozen Egg Substitute / No Enjauladas Original Sustituto De Huevo Congelado – 32 oz carton, use-by date: MAR 07 2025

  • Bob Evans Better’n Eggs Made with Real Egg Whites – 32 oz carton, use-by date: AUG 10 2025

The affected items were distributed to distributors in Ohio and Texas, as well as to food service establishments in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, and Iowa. FSIS also notes that the products may have been shipped to additional states.

How Serious Is the Risk?

This recall is classified as a Class III, which means the risk to health is considered low and adverse effects are unlikely.

So far, no reports of illness or injury have been linked to the contaminated egg products. However, anyone who experiences unusual symptoms after consumption is advised to contact a healthcare provider immediately.

If you’ve purchased any of the listed egg substitutes:

  • Check the use-by dates and establishment number (“G1804”)

  • Do not consume the product

  • Discard it immediately or return it to the place of purchase

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can reach out to the manufacturer or consult the FSIS website for more information.
