Ukrainian forces have confirmed they have withdrawn from Vuhledar after a series of intense Russian attacks.

The decision came after Ukrainian troops suffered heavy losses, and the risk of encirclement increased.

According to statements from the Khortytsia Operational-Strategic Group of Troops and the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade, Russian forces managed to send reinforcements and launched flanking attacks, leaving the Ukrainian defense at risk.

“The enemy has not given up its attempts to capture Vuhledar,” the military reported.

Ukrainian command decided to pull back troops to avoid losing more soldiers and equipment. The withdrawal allows Ukrainian forces to regroup and prepare for future operations.

Strategic Town Under Heavy Pressure

For almost two years, Ukraine's 72nd Mechanized Brigade has defended Vuhledar, which is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Donetsk.

The town is strategically important, but Russian forces have repeatedly tried to take it since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

In recent weeks, Russian troops intensified their attacks, pushing closer to the center of Vuhledar. To protect their forces, Ukraine made the choice to withdraw from the town and avoid being completely surrounded by Russian troops.

“We’ve pulled back to save our soldiers and equipment, and we’re preparing for the next phase,” the statement said.
