Mattel has issued a recall for all models of its Fisher-Price Snuga Baby Swings after five infant deaths were reported between 2012 and 2022.

Sold in 21 Different Models

The recall, initiated in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), addresses suffocation risks linked to improper use of the swings.

The Fisher-Price Snuga Swing, designed for babies up to nine months old, offers both front-to-back and side-to-side movement.

It was sold in 21 different models across major retailers like Walmart, Target, Sam's Club, and Amazon, at a price of around $160, according to Ziare.

Approximately 2.1 million units were sold in the United States, 99,000 in Canada, and 500 in Mexico since 2010, according to a joint statement from the U.S. CPSC, Health Canada, and Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Agency.

Should Not Be Used For Sleep

The reported deaths occurred when the swing was used as a sleep space for infants aged one to three months, with additional bedding materials like blankets increasing the risk of suffocation.

The CPSC stressed that the swings should never be used for infant sleep and that no bedding materials should be added.

"Consumers should immediately remove the headrest by cutting the ties, and take out the body support insert from the seat pad before continuing to use the swing," the CPSC advised in its statement. In response, Fisher-Price is offering a $25 partial refund to customers who make these modifications, rather than a full recall of the product.

Although the recall is aimed at making the swings safer, it follows growing concerns about infant sleep safety. Parents and caregivers are urged to follow these guidelines to avoid any further risk of injury to their children.
