President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit the White House on September 26 to discuss the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
According to White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre, the leaders will review Ukraine’s strategic plans and the U.S. support for Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression.
Zelensky is traveling to the U.S. to attend the 79th U.N. General Assembly in New York, where he will present a five-point victory plan to U.S. officials.
The plan’s details have been shared with U.S. leaders, who believe it has potential for success.
As President Biden, a key architect of the pro-Kyiv coalition, prepares to leave office in January, his administration's cautious approach to aid has faced criticism.
Despite the $61 billion U.S. aid package approved in April, Ukraine has argued that the support is insufficient and arriving too slowly.
The country is also awaiting U.S. approval for long-range strikes on Russia.
With Biden’s term ending, either Vice President Harris or Republican challenger Donald Trump will assume office next year.
Ukraine hesitates meeting Trump
Trump has expressed a willingness to meet with Zelensky, and the Ukrainian leader hopes to present his victory plan to him as well.
However, Trump’s potential return raises concerns in Ukraine.
His administration’s past actions, including delays in aid and statements suggesting pressure on Ukraine to cede territory or abandon NATO ambitions, have alarmed Kyiv.
Trump has claimed he could end the war in 24 hours if re-elected but has avoided confirming support for Ukraine’s victory in recent statements.
