Huawei has begun a major shift in its smartphone strategy, officially moving away from Android and introducing its own HarmonyOS Next operating system.
The new software is now available in an open beta version in China.
According to the German tech magazine Giga, several of Huawei's latest flagship models are the first to experience HarmonyOS Next without Android.
These models include:
Huawei Mate 60
Huawei Mate 60 Pro
Huawei Mate X5
Huawei MatePad Pro 13.2-inch
In addition, models that were part of a previous closed beta, such as the Huawei Pura 70 series and the upcoming Huawei Pocket 2, are also being updated to the open beta of HarmonyOS Next.
Saying Goodbye to Android
Huawei has long been preparing for this moment.
HarmonyOS Next aims to offer a fresh foundation for Huawei's ecosystem, enabling app developers to design apps specifically for the new platform.
For now, HarmonyOS Next is only available in the Chinese market, and there is no official word on when or if it will be released internationally.
In Europe, Huawei's smartphones continue to operate on Android-based EMUI, with HarmonyOS currently powering only Huawei’s tablets and smartwatches.
