The war in Ukraine remains a critical issue on the global stage, with millions hoping for an end to the conflict.

During his campaign, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump claimed he could bring peace within 24 hours, raising expectations for a quick resolution.

Analysts, though, caution that such promises may lead to unintended consequences, particularly if security guarantees for Ukraine are overlooked.

Gives Russia Time to Rebuild

A report from Chatham House, a British think tank, suggests Russia could use the opportunity of a ceasefire to its advantage.

Experts warn that freezing the front lines without solid defense arrangements for Ukraine could allow Moscow to regroup its forces, according to Ziare.

This pause would give Russia time to rebuild its military and economy, paving the way for future aggression.

While Russian forces have suffered significant losses, including over 700,000 soldiers killed or injured, they continue to hold key positions in Ukraine.

Putin’s strategy appears to focus on sustaining the war despite these losses, using time to strengthen his military and tighten control over occupied territories.

A ceasefire based on current territorial lines could solidify Russia’s grip on critical assets, including the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Analysts fear this would cripple Ukraine’s economy, which already requires at least $500 billion for reconstruction.

Without guarantees of lasting security, foreign investors are unlikely to provide the necessary support for rebuilding efforts.

Public opinion in Ukraine reflects the growing complexity of the situation.

While support for ending the war has increased, with 32% of Ukrainians now open to territorial concessions in exchange for peace, a majority — 58% — remains against such compromises.

These divisions reflect the risks of a ceasefire that leaves Ukraine vulnerable to future attacks.

If Trump negotiates a ceasefire that meets Russian demands without ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty, experts believe it would embolden the Kremlin.

Such a scenario could destabilize the region further and lead to long-term instability.
