The Lithuanian government is developing a comprehensive mass evacuation plan to protect its citizens in the event of a war, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).

A Precautionary Measure

According to Lenta this plan, which involves coordination between the MIA, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Transport, along with the National Crisis Management Center, is a precautionary measure aimed at ensuring public safety during a potential conflict.

Under the proposed evacuation strategy, local governments would be responsible for relocating up to a quarter of the urban population. The plan prioritizes the evacuation of vulnerable groups, including individuals with disabilities, pregnant women, and families with young children.

This approach highlights the Lithuanian government's commitment to safeguarding its most at-risk citizens during emergencies.

Tighter Border Security

The announcement of this evacuation plan comes as Lithuania has tightened border security measures, particularly along its frontier with Russia. Rustamas Liubajevas, head of the State Border Guard Service, noted that these enhanced security protocols are not necessary across the entire border but are crucial in the most "problematic" areas identified by authorities.

These preparations reflect growing concerns in Lithuania about regional security and the potential for conflict, given the geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe. By planning for the worst-case scenario, Lithuanian officials aim to ensure that the country is prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to any crisis, minimizing risks to public safety and maintaining national security.
