The war in Ukraine has now entered its third year, but Russian forces still have not captured Kyiv or Kharkiv, the country’s second-largest city.

Diggin Specialized Tunnels

On October 6, Interfax-Ukraine reported alarming movements by Russian troops in northeastern Ukraine. The operational situation around Kharkiv remains difficult, with Ukrainian Defense Forces continuing to repel the attacks from occupying Russian forces.

Reports indicate that Russian troops are concentrating in the heavily damaged border town of Vovchansk and Hlyboke in the Kharkiv region, according to SE.

They are bringing in more soldiers and digging specialized tunnels, a tactic they have become adept at. According to a spokesperson for the National Guard of Ukraine's “Chartiya” brigade:

“They regularly use this tactic. It likely suits urban and suburban combat more than forested areas. They know how to dig.”

Flush Them Out of These Holes

As Russian forces conceal themselves and their equipment underground, Ukrainian troops face increased danger. They must send personnel toward these positions, risking lives because drones alone cannot handle the situation.

Dehtariow noted, “We still have to use infantry to flush them out of these holes.”

Additionally, Russian attacks on Kupiansk raise concerns as it serves as a logistics hub for the Ukrainian army in the Kharkiv region.

“Unfortunately, there are a significant number of bomb attacks in Kupiansk, and the level of destruction is very high,” said Andriy Besedin, the head of the city’s military administration, in a televised interview.

He added that the left bank has been practically destroyed, with all critical and civilian infrastructure annihilated by Russian forces.
