Romania’s Chief of Defense, General Gheorghiță Vlad, issued a clear warning at a recent ceremony marking the 165th anniversary of the Romanian General Staff.

Peace is No Longer Certain

He stated that "peace is no longer a certainty on the European continent" as Russia’s actions have intensified security risks, particularly in the Black Sea region.

Vlad emphasized that these threats directly impact Romania’s defense priorities and NATO’s strategic interests.

According to Vlad, the Romanian Army has adapted its defense structures to counter the evolving security landscape, according to Digi24.

Measures include increased readiness of air defense forces, enhanced rapid response teams, and improved early warning systems.

Romania’s national defense strategy remains closely tied to its Euro-Atlantic partnerships, especially its strategic alliance with the United States.

These relationships are viewed as essential to deterring threats in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea area.

A Pillar of National Identity

Reflecting on Romania’s military history, Vlad honored the legacy that began under ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza in 1859.

"Defense has always been a pillar of national identity," he said.

Vlad acknowledged the sacrifices Romanian soldiers have made over the years, securing the military’s respected position in the nation.

The Romanian military plays an active role in NATO and EU missions, contributing to operations in the Western Balkans, Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean.

Vlad also highlighted Romania’s role in hosting allied forces as part of NATO’s collective defense strategy. This includes facilitating the placement and readiness of NATO resources and personnel on Romanian soil.

Romania has also strengthened its defense collaboration with neighboring Moldova to counter hybrid threats.

Vlad noted that Romania has provided significant support to Ukraine, contributing military resources and expertise in response to Russia’s ongoing aggression.

To further ensure troop readiness, Romania is prioritizing high-quality equipment and weapons for its forces.

Vlad confirmed that efforts to improve Romania’s defensive capabilities are "unwavering," as the country continues to adapt to the escalating security threats across Europe.
